“It’s time to cool it down, and we have a responsibility to do that,” Mr. Biden added
A whole day after the shooting, the gunman’s motivation remained unknown, with investigators believing he acted alone before being fatally shot by Secret Service officers. Biden requested an independent security investigation of the incident, which killed one bystander and badly injured two others. The FBI was examining the incident as a possible act of domestic terrorism.
The attack rattled the foundation of the American political system, prompting a reappraisal and – at least briefly – a pause in the heated 2024 presidential race, which has become increasingly savage.
The likely Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, claimed that a gunshot entered the top portion of his right ear. His advisers claimed he was in “great spirits” and doing well when he landed in Milwaukee Sunday evening for the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday.
